The famed gorilla Koko, known for mastering sign language and building a rapport with humans, has died in California, a research center announced Thursday, June 21, 208. She was 46. Born Hanabi-ko (Japanese for "Fireworks Child") on US independence day in 1971 at San Francisco Zoo, she was widely known by her nickname. Animal psychologist Penny Patterson began teaching Koko sign language in 1972. The western lowland gorilla became one of the most famous subjects of research into how apes use language, reputedly learning more than 1,000 words in American Sign Language, and becoming the subject of books and television shows.

(أ ف ب) – ماتت عن 46 عاما الغوريلا كوكو التي نشأت في الأسر وصارت مشهورة في العالم لإتقانها لغة الإشارة، بحسب ما أعلنت منظمة «غوريلا فاونديشن» التي كانت تعتني بها.
ولدت هذه الغوريلا في الرابع من يوليو 1971 في حديقة سان فرانسيسكو، وهي «ماتت أثناء نومها»، بحسب البيان.
ومنذ العام 1972، بدأت باحثة ومتخصصة في علم نفس الحيوانات تدعى فرانسين باترسون بتعليم كوكو لغة الإشارة، قبل أن تنتقل إلى جامعة ستانفورد حيثُ أنشئ مركز لدراسة القردة.
وكانت تحفظ أكثر من ألف كلمة، وجذبت عددا كبيرا من معدّي التحقيقات المصوّرة وطارت شهرتها في العالم.
وزاد من شهرة كوكو أنها كانت متعلّقة بهرّة صغيرة رفيقة لها، ولما قضت الهرّة في حادث سير ظلّت كوكو حزينة أشهرا طويلة.
